Canada Celebrates The Right To Know Week

Ottawa

[2009-9-28]

Ottawa, September 25, 2009 – Canada is joining countries around the world to celebrate the Right to Know Week from September 28 to October 2, 2009.

Under the overall theme Making it Right to Know: the Canadian Experience and Global Perspective, world-renowned experts will share their experience and thoughts on various topics including:

  • Citizens’ Engagement and State Accountability during a Town Hall meeting on September 28;
  • Transparency in the Digital Era will be discussed at a Conference for Parliamentarians on September 29;
  • Democracy, the Right to Information and the Role of Legislation at Legal Panel on September 30; and
  • Access to Information without Frontiers: International Perspectives on Access to Information during an International Panel on October 1.

These events will be held in Ottawa. However, the Town Hall will be webcast live and filmed by the Cable Public Affairs Channel (CPAC).

“This national celebration will help to engage citizens, parliamentarians and institutions in the debate on access to public information”, said the Interim Information Commissioner of Canada, Suzanne Legault. She added that this program of activities and events has been developed in partnership with provinces and territories to celebrate and promote this important democratic right.
